Yorkshire Terrier Information

Yorkshire Terrier

The Yorkshire Terrier was introduced to the United States in 1872 and was recognized by the AKC in 1878. In 1865, the foundation sire of the Yorkshire Terrier breed was born. The Huddersfield Ben was owned by MA Foster, and he enjoyed a very public life popularizing the breed in England. He demonstrated that he was very successful in rat-killing competitions (these were very popular in the 19th century), and he also won over 70 awards as a show dog.

Yorkshire Terrier History

The Yorkshire Terrier originated as a breed in the counties of Yorkshire, Manchester and Leeds in the northern part of England in the mid-19th century, 1860s and 1870s. These were all workers' dogs, used to keep insects under control in textile mills and coal mines. Due to the fact which bloodline was used to establish the Yorkshire Terrier, there is much speculation due to the breeders of these dogs. The bloodlines of the Scottish Terrier, the Paisley, and the Clysdale Terrier were probably included in the bloodlines. If he liked the spirit and appearance of dogs, he sided with them.

When buying a Yorkshire Terrier, be sure to look for a knowledgeable breeder. Look for a breeder who prioritizes breeding for temperament, trainability and good health in all matings. Such a breeder will inquire carefully from the buyers. A good breeder will always try to be available for advice and consultation after sales and will insist on getting a dog back if you are unable to keep it for any reason.

Most of these dogs are simply unwanted through no fault of their own. Owners often find that they were unprepared for the care they needed. Owners are often gone all day, and therefore are unable to provide this lovely little dog with the required amount of time, attention, and activity level. Sometimes job or life situations change, making it impossible for someone to keep their beloved pet.
